What is Room Integrity Testing?

Room Integrity Testing is a method used to determine how long fire suppressant agents take to descend to a given level, without releasing the gas itself.  If a fire is detected, gaseous fire suppression systems release a gas agent into the room enclosure to reduce oxygen levels and thereby suppress or put out the fire.

A room integrity test uses a fan system to create a pressure differential between the room or enclosure under test and the external environment.  The test then checks the integrity of the room to make sure that the gas will work effectively before escaping, ensuring that the fire can be suppressed or extinguished.

The main standards in the UK for room integrity testing are BS EN 15004 & ISO 14520.

EPS Group are able to complete a room integrity test with minimal disruption, meaning the equipment can continue to operate whilst the test is completed.

We can also provide a diagnostics service should the room integrity test fail.

A retention period of 10 minutes is usually the minimum period that the suppressant agents are required to be retained.

Room Integrity Testing – The Process

We appreciate that a room integrity test can be an inconvenience to the running of a business, so we do our utmost to make the process as smooth as possible.  Below is a simplified version of the testing process:

  • The room should be prepared for the test; any ventilation systems that have ducts to outside should be set to the ‘hold time’ condition which usually means that the dampers are closed.

  • A calibrated fan system is installed in a suitable doorway.

  • The room will be pressurised/depressurised to various pressure differentials and a number of measurements and environmental readings are taken.

  • Once the fan is running, the actual room integrity test generally takes around 30 minutes, and results are available instantly. However, at EPS Group, we allow up to 2 hours to complete a test in order to ensure that there is an opportunity to address any unexpected problems that may arise.

  • During the course of the test all equipment can continue to operate, meaning minimal disruption during the course of the test.

What if the Room Integrity Test fails?

Our experienced Technicians are able to use a number of tools to diagnose where the air leakage may be occurring from within the room or enclosure:

Thermal Image Diagnosis – When a sufficient temperature differential exists our Technicians can depressurise the enclosure and use thermal images cameras to identify air infiltration points.

Smoke Testing – The room or enclosure can either be filled with smoke or smoke pens used to identify areas of air leakage. Whilst smoke is a relatively simple tool, it can be very effective in diagnosing leaks.

Anemometers – Anemometers that measure wind speed can to used locate small areas of air leakage.
